Campers will become experts in animal architecture as they explore how various animals of all kinds build their homes. From the smallest caddisfly larva case to the largest beaver dam, discover how and why certain creatures build homes the way that they do. Campers will investigate the special characteristics, functions, and habitats of each dwelling and even practice their engineering skills by picking a few favorite examples and attempting to recreate these amazing structures. You will be fascinated by all of the different ways animals create a place to call home sweet home.

C.S.I. (Countryside Investigators) – Storrs Pond Recreation Area

Join VINS’ C.S.I. Team for a week of natural science sleuthing. Campers will hone their investigative skills with a new case to solve every day. Visit the scene of the crime, hunt for clues and solve the mystery behind some of nature’s most puzzling conundrums. The C.S.I. Team will be introduced to current natural science research and data gathering techniques and use this knowledge to discover who is threatening our amphibians? Is it finally safe for the Bald Eagles to come back? And even delve into a cold case from 200 years ago. So grab your C.S.I. kit and get ready to follow the clues. You never know where they may lead! At the Storrs Pond location, canoeing and time for free swim will be provided.*

This camp dedicated to learning the art of archery.* Learning to safely and properly use a bow and arrow is a great way for campers to enjoy an active hobby outdoors. Our trained and certified instructors will teach proper shooting form and introduce this activity in a safe and comfortable manner. Each day, campers will participate in a session on proper shooting technique as well as lessons on the role archery plays in nature awareness and appreciation. Campers will also enjoy archery games and a mini tournament at the end of the week. Other activities will include themed crafts, hikes, additional practice on the range, and even how to make archery tackle. All skill levels are welcome.

Science of Amazing Raptors (SOAR) Camp

Calling all avian enthusiasts, Science of Amazing Raptors (SOAR) Camp, is the perfect unique experience for you. Join VINS’ expert educators and bird trainers for an opportunity to experience what few adults could imagine: an up-close experience with nature’s most perfect hunter- the Raptor! Come spend the week at VINS learning what makes raptors such excellent hunters and discover the secrets of raptor training. Participants will view private bird programs, learn fun facts through games and crafts, get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at VINS’ bird rehabilitation facility and even help care for our birds. On the last day, campers can get their picture taken next to a raptor on the glove of one of our trained staff. Get ready for an unforgettable week with eagles, owls, hawks, falcons, and so much more. This VINS specialty camp is a rare opportunity, and spaces fill quickly.

Survival Adventures – VINS Nature Center

Survival Adventures is an introductory camp for young explorers to gain a better knowledge and understanding of what it takes to live in the outdoors. Under the guidance of our expert instructors, campers will practice basic skills in areas such as preparing a campfire, building a shelter, looking for animal signs, identifying plants, navigating by compass, and tying knots. Campers will even have the option of participating in an introduction to the use, history, and importance of a bow and arrow as a survival tool.* Daily themes, stories, and mock survival scenarios will encourage campers’ appreciation of nature. This camp provides and great opportunity for young outdoor enthusiasts to build proficiency in basic wilderness and teamwork skills all while having a blast!

Can you spot a rabbit a mile away? Smell a trail that is 300 hours cold? Or hear a mouse under 2 feet of snow? Did you know that there are superheroes living among? We share our world with amazing animals and each of them has superpowers that are key to their success. In Survival Superpowers, discover the incredible abilities of animals to see, hear, smell, feel and taste. Each day, will be a new investigation into the incredible world of the five senses and campers will see how their nose, eyes, ears, mouth, and skin stack up to those of animals. During the week there will also be opportunities for beginner yoga to learn how to move and bend more like the animals of the world.*

Throughout the week, VINS instructors will guide campers in teambuilding challenges and games that will get campers working together and having a blast on the trail. Activities, including a trail maintenance project, a good old fashioned bushwhack, and map making, will reinforce daily themes. Get ready to pack your bags and take a hike!

This camp is the perfect way for your young explorer to be introduced to the world of questing and geocaching, real-life treasure hunting experiences in the outdoors! Campers will set out on adventures to discover the Valley Quests and geocaches of Quechee, VT, while exploring the natural world around them. Our skilled instructors will guide participants in the art of orienteering to become expert VINS-questers. On the last day of camp, the group will work as a team to create their very own VINS Quest to hide for other explorers to find right at the VINS Nature Center!
