FLEDGLINGS Camp Descriptions – Children Entering Grades 1-3
Animal Adventures
.
VINS Nature Center, Quechee, VT

Animal Adventures is designed for animal enthusiasts. This unique camp experience offers opportunities for exploration of the amazing adaptations of mammal, bird, and reptile and amphibian species that call Vermont home. Campers will examine the habitat, adaptations and food chains of these different animal groups as well as key conservation issues. VINS’ educators will guide campers through exciting games describing animal behavior, crafts highlighting unique adaptations, hikes searching for tracks and signs, live animal encounters, and much more to enhance each daily theme. Campers will learn incredible facts and become experts on their favorite critters as well as possibly discover animals that are new to them.

Animal Builders – Storrs Pond Recreation Area

Campers will become experts in animal architecture as they explore how various animals of all kinds build their homes. From the smallest caddisfly larva case to the largest beaver dam, discover how and why certain creatures build homes the way that they do. Campers will investigate the special characteristics, functions, and habitats of each dwelling and even practice their engineering skills by picking a few favorite examples and attempting to recreate these amazing structures. Storrs Pond Recreation Area also offers exceptional opportunities for water adventures including canoeing and swimming.* You will be fascinated by all of the different ways animals create a place to call home sweet home.

Come get your feet wet with VINS during a fun-packed week of aquatic exploration! Throughout the week, campers will explore and discover why water is such an important resource in our environment through exciting science activities, games, and crafts. They will also look below the water’s surface and investigate the amazing animals that make the water their home. Storrs Pond Recreation Area in Hanover, NH, offers exceptional opportunities for on-water adventures including fishing, canoeing, and swimming.* So grab a net, put on your suits, and dive in for a week of Aqua Quest!

Creepy Crawlies

How do bees make honey? What kinds of insects live in the water? Do all spiders make webs? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this week of camp adventures. Campers will investigate the secret lives of ants, spiders, worms, grasshoppers, crickets and other creepy crawly critters. Hands-on activities, games and crafts will allow campers to explore where these creatures live, what they eat, how they move, and the role each plays in creating a healthy ecosystem. Bring your bug boxes; there are lots of nooks and crannies at the VINS Nature Center to find creepy crawlies!

What makes beavers good engineers? How do bees use math? How does nature inspire technological advances? Join VINS educators for a program that celebrates the intersection of nature and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and fosters curiosity and creative problem solving. Through a combination of daily puzzles and guided nature discovery, campers will be challenged to stretch their minds and grow their problem-solving skills in a fun, supportive, and collaborative environment.

Come explore the world of flight. From a tiny honey bee to the great Bald Eagle, there are so many amazing critters that have the unique ability to fly through the sky. Fantastic Fliers investigates how different animals are able to fly and why it is important for their survival. Campers will go bugging in the meadow, discover the world’s only flying mammal, meet VINS’ resident raptors, and even explore how to engineer their own flying machines! Join VINS to learn all about the power of flight and the creatures of New England that flap, soar, and hover overhead.

Every animal needs a habitat, but not all habitats are the same. Our Habitat Hunters team will explore the diverse ecosystems of the VINS Nature Center and discover how animals make their homes in the forest, field, vernal pool, and river's edge. Habitat treks in search of food, water, shelter, and space will take campers on in-depth explorations of what makes up an animal's habitat as they discover who is living at the VINS Nature Center or in their very own back yards.

Through daily mysteries based on current research in the natural sciences, campers will practice the skills needed to be good detectives and crack the case. Campers will learn to work in a team to piece together some of nature’s most puzzling conundrums: Who is threatening our amphibians? What happened to the Monarch? Is it finally safe for the Bald Eagles to come back? So grab your sleuthing cap, and get ready to follow the clues. You never know where they may lead! Storrs Pond Recreation Area also offers exceptional opportunities for water adventures including canoeing and swimming.*

This camp is the perfect way for your young explorer to be introduced to the world of questing and geocaching, real-life treasure hunting experiences in the outdoors! Campers will set out on adventures to discover the Valley Quests and geocaches of Quechee, VT, while exploring the natural world around them. Our skilled instructors will guide participants in the art of orienteering to become expert VINS-questers. On the last day of camp, the group will work as a team to create their very own VINS Quest to hide for other explorers to find right at the VINS Nature Center!

Water Water Everywhere – Storrs Pond Recreation Area

Where swimming lessons meet nature exploration, join VINS and Storrs Pond for a week of exploration and aquatic escapades.* Students will learn swimming fundamentals from the experts and discover why humans have been so inspired by a frog’s kick, a turtle’s stroke, and the beats of a butterfly’s wing. Storrs Pond swim instructors will build campers’ confidence in the water during daily swimming lessons while VINS educators will cultivate your child’s curiosity for science and the great outdoors as they lead adventures in the wetland habitats around the pond. Through swimming, play, and nature exploration, campers will learn how plants and animals have adapted to a world where water truly is everywhere.

Woodland Scouts – VINS Nature Center

Join VINS’ very own woodland scout troop and become at home in the forests surrounding the VINS Nature Center. During this camp, scouts will gain comfort traveling through the woods and be introduced to beginner wilderness skills through exciting themed activities as well as games, stories, crafts, and more. Daily mini-hikes will encourage campers to expand their scout knowledge by learning skills such as how to build a survival shelter, following a map, how to identify trees and plants, and campfire safety. A walk in the woods will never be the same again after this week of “tree-mendous” fun. Campers who successfully master these skills will assist in building a campfire at the end of the week for a closing ceremony.
