Artist Exhibition with Richard Sachs & Betsy Carroll Smith
.
Medium: Painting and Photography
Two VINS Volunteers have teamed up to present two different forms of art for our winter exhibit in the VINS Classroom. Some pieces are for sale while others are here for us to enjoy!
.
About the Artists
Richard Sachs - I still have the well-worn Golden Nature Guide to Birds, with the two robins on the cover, that sat by the picture window in my childhood home in the 1950's. My first SLR camera arrived with the start of college and fit my hand like a glove. But it wasn't until the 1990's that I was in a rural enough setting to be able to point my lens at feathers. Bird photography requires patience and luck more than fancy equipment and knowledge to be successful. Some of my favorites have been captured by chance with a small point and shoot camera. I don't care to lug around the massive lenses used by professionals. A trip to the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador last year was a birder's paradise.
.
Betsy Carroll Smith - Having grown up in a family of artists, I’ve always enjoyed drawing and painting as well as exploring the natural world. An early interest in aviation inspired me to learn to fly at age sixteen, and I recently retired after a long career as an airline pilot. Perhaps that’s why I feel such an affinity for birds! Now I have more time to pursue my passion for art and nature, such as participating in hawk watches, sketching wildlife with the aid of a spotting scope at nearby wetlands, and especially being around the beautiful raptors at VINS. My paintings are created from my own direct experiences, sketches and photos, and I hope to convey the thrill and sense of awe that I feel in those moments.
.
The Artist Exhibition will be on display at the VINS Nature Center through March 31.
