Hoots and Howls is a full-day, family-friendly event. Each portion of the day is designed to be educational, nature-based, non-frightening, and fun! Together we will get up close to snakes, owls, skulls and bones and have ooey-gooey Halloween fun all day long.

The evening portion includes a guided tour through multiple stations on the new Forest Canopy Walk where you’ll enjoy stories, experiments, puppetry and a skit. The center will be lit with Jack-o-Lanterns and you can wrap up the evening with Tricky Treats.

Some highlights of the day along with our regularly scheduled raptor programs:

10:00am – 4:00pm / Skulls & Bones
Discover how much you can learn from skulls and bones in this ongoing hands-on activity.

11:00am – 4:00pm / Face Painting
An owl mask, a bat on the back of your hand, or a creepy spider crawling up your arm—come get in character for Hoots & Howls!

11:00am – 11:45am / Owls: Myths and Misconceptions
Are owls really as wise as they seem? Find out in this program featuring several species of live owls.

12:45pm – 1:30pm / Raptor Chats
Enjoy a guided tour of the raptor enclosures and learn how we care for our permanent residents.

1:30pm – 2:00pm / Non-scary Snakes
Meet our friendly corn snakes and unravel the mysteries of snake biology.

2:45pm – 3:15pm / Ravenous Raptors
In true Halloween spirit, watch our raptors pick the bones of their own tricky treats.

3:30pm – 4:15pm / Jurassic VINS!
Follow a paleontological journey through time and discover why birds are living dinosaurs. You’ll meet several dinosaur descendants along the way.

4:15pm – 5:15pm / Peeps & Squeaks
Enjoy a puppet show, crafts, songs, and edible owl pellets in this interactive program for young audiences. You’ll get to meet a live owl up close. “Owl” see you there!

5:30pm – 8:00pm / Tours & Tricky Treats
Join us on a guided tour as we visit four stations on the new Forest Canopy Walk and around the center to be entertained by master storyteller Matt Krug, perform spooky science experiments, observe engaging puppetry with Lindsay and Her Puppet Pals, and watch a comical nature skit. At the end of your tour, you’ll have an opportunity to eat some yummy tricky treats and enjoy a live bird encounter in our pavilion.
