Join us at the VINS Nature Center for a Homeschool Series! Each lesson will take place in our Outdoor Classroom or August Pavilion which provide the perfect settings for outdoor exploration and nature play in the company of other families. Feel free to stay on campus after the lessons to enjoy the public programs, exhibits, and hiking trails.
Specific topics include:
- Fossil Detectives – Look at and hold the fossilized remains of animals. Use observations and inferences to make a prediction about whether they could have lived here in the past and, if so, how the land must have changed.
- Birds are Dinosaurs – Walk through our Birds are Dinosaurs exhibit and enjoy some additional activities that demonstrate how our feathered friends evolved from the Theropod dinosaurs of the distant past.
- Erosion and Stratigraphy – Explore the VINS Stream Table. Learn about the effects of erosion on the changing landscape, and investigate how paleontologists use stratigraphy to understand the relative age of fossils.
- Geology Hike* – Uncover the story of how glaciers, rivers, humans, and more have shaped the local landscape as we hike to the bottom of the Quechee Gorge.
*This series is geared toward older children. For the final lesson, children must be able to traverse this moderately steep and uneven terrain either independently or with parental support.
