Join us at the VINS Nature Center for a Homeschool Series! Each lesson will take place in our Outdoor Classroom or August Pavilion which provide the perfect settings for outdoor exploration and nature play in the company of other families. Feel free to stay on campus after the lessons to enjoy the public programs, exhibits, and hiking trails.
Specific topics include:
- Sight – Find all the colors of the rainbow in nature. Meet animals that use either bright warning colors or subtle camouflage to stay safe, and practice your hiding skills in a game of Eagle Eye. What do you see from your Sit Spot?
- Sound – Learn how owls hunt in the Owl Ears Puppet Show, match the objects in various sound shakers, and pretend to be a stalking predator in the Deer Ears Game. What do you hear in your Sit Spot?
- Smell – Discover animals that use their sense of smell to communicate, find your scent family and home, and go on a scent scavenger hunt. What do you smell in your Sit Spot?
- Touch – Imitate a racoon’s sense of touch, trust your bare feet (and not your eyes) to follow a trail, and communicate by touch with a partner to play a gentle game of Blindfold Dodgeball! What can you touch in your Sit Spot?
*This lesson is geared towards younger children.
