DESCRIPTION:Artist Exhibition – Betsy Smith\nNovember 1 to January 31\nNeale Pavilion / VINS Nature Center \nAbout Betsy Smith: \nBetsy’s artwork is a celebration of the amazing natural world around us\, from distant galaxies to the fascinating wild creatures with whom we share our sacred Earth. Her preferred mediums are watercolors and acrylics. She particularly enjoys watercolor painting on location\, where the experience of sunlight\, weather\, and birdsongs adds a lively dimension to the creative process. Betsy loves the feeling of being an integral part of the landscape as she is painting. Sketching birds and other wildlife also gives her joy. Betsy’s sincere hope is that through her artwork she can share her love of wild creatures and the special places they call home. \nBetsy grew up in an artistic family who encouraged her to follow her dreams wherever they might lead. Although artistically inclined\, she developed an early fascination with aviation and space\, learning to fly at age 16. \nDuring her flying career\, Betsy always made time for art\, attending painting workshops and sketch-journaling while on her flying trips. Through her membership in the International Association of Astronomical Artists\, Betsy was able to combine her interests in art and the cosmos\, attending space art workshops in exotic locales. In 1995 she was one of twenty artists from around the world whose paintings were sent up to the Russian space station Mir for the first art exhibit in earth orbit. Her painting was the one selected by the crew to remain on Mir. \nAlong with watercolor landscape painting\, Betsy particularly enjoys sketching and painting wildlife\, often on location with the aid of a spotting scope. In 2016\, Betsy became a volunteer at VINS\, and is especially thrilled at the opportunity to fly raptors in the education programs. DESCRIPTION:Decaying Ice\, Lingering Fall\nWednesday\, December 11 / 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM\nFree and open to the public* \nAs climate change brings one unprecedented environmental change after another to our region\, one of its most noticeable impacts is on pond and lake ice. \nIn the last two years\, our region saw declines in the extent and thickness of ice that had rarely occurred before. Using macro-photographic images\, local photographer Steve Arcone documented the beautiful\, but disturbing progression of ice decay on a small pond in West Lebanon\, NH during the fall and winter of 2022 – 2023 and 2023 – 2024. \nThis photo-story is comprised of stunning photographs that will take viewers on a colorful journey from the initial cool-blue sunlit freezes in mid-November through the many warmly colored thaw-freeze episodes observed in early winter to spectacular\, blue crystals frozen within a sheet of “black ice.” \nJoin us for an event that blends art and science to explore the beautiful fragility of ice. \nAbout Steve Arcone:\nSteve Arcone grew up in Greenwich Village\, New York City\, has two degrees from Cornell University and a PhD in geophysical exploration from Dartmouth College. He retired in 2016 from the Cold Regions Laboratory in Hanover\, NH. During his career\, Steve made more than 40 trips to Alaska to study sea ice\, permafrost\, and glaciers and twelve trips to Antarctica to research the snow and ice structures within the West and East Antarctic ice sheets. \nPresently an adjunct professor at Dartmouth College\, Steve is also a juried member of The League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and the New Hampshire Society of Photographic Artists.
