SUMMARY:Overland Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:In Celebration of Earth Day! \nOverland Film Screening\nSaturday\, April 27 / 7 PM – 9:15 PM\n$13 General Public; $10 VINS Members \nGet Your Tickets! \nThis April\, awaken your inner wild to nurture the wild around us. VINS is thrilled to bring Overland\, an original documentary\, to the Upper Valley. Afterward\, join a conversation with a panel of falconers to learn about this ancient sport\, the lifestyle they have chosen\, and the connection they have to their birds and the natural world. \nFilm Synopsis\nHow can we connect to our natural\, primal spirit while modern society threatens to erase it? \nOverland unfolds in a world increasingly driven by technology and routine\, where we are losing touch with nature and our primal spirit is fading. Immersed in remote deserts\, mountains\, and grasslands\, three extraordinary people from contrasting cultures practice the ancient art of falconry to wake their inner wilds. Lauren\, a daredevil anthropologist from Oklahoma\, trains injured eagles to fly and hunt while scouring the world for age-old falconry secrets. Giovanni fled a troubled childhood in Rome for a solitary life in the Italian countryside with his wolves\, hawks\, and horse. Meanwhile\, in Dubai\, Khalifa is training to be the world’s best falcon racer. However\, in their quests to connect to the natural world\, Lauren\, Giovanni\, and Khalifa must overcome social rejection\, vanishing traditions\, dwindling wilderness\, elusive prey and the complicated instincts of their falcons\, eagles\, and hawks. The stories in Overland offer a stunning cinematic journey across four continents that twists and turns like nature itself\, bridging ancient to modern\, east to west\, and earth to sky. \nView the film trailer at: www.falconbridgecollection.com \n“…one of the most unexpectedly thrilling and satisfying cinematic adventures you’ll have.” —Film Threat \n\n\nFilmmaker Bios\nHusband and wife team Revere La Noue and Elisabeth Haviland James set off to make Overland as a response to an ever-modernizing world that leaves little room for the wild. While spending hundreds of hours in the field with Lauren\, Khalifa and Giovanni they discovered in them a shared humanity across cultures\, borders and religions that manifested itself through the practice of the ancient art of falconry.\n\nElisabeth Haviland James – Director/Producer/Editor\nA passionate documentary storyteller\, James is a Peabody and Emmy-winning filmmaker (The Loving Story\, Althea\, In So Many Words) whose work has screened theatrically\, on television and in museums; her work includes historical\, cinema verite\, environmental and experimental films. Overland is the second documentary feature film she has directed and produced. \nIn 2021 James produced and edited Exposing Muybridge\, currently on the festival circuit. She also edited the third episode of the four-part Apple TV series Lincoln’s Dilemma\, launched in February 2022. She was commissioned by the Morehead Planetarium at the University of North Carolina to write and curate a full-dome production about the American South\, which premiered in October 2019. James was named one of two film fellows in the state by the North Carolina Arts Council in 2015. James has taught documentary filmmaking at Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies and as an artist in residence at the Oklahoma Arts Institute; she has also served as a guest lecturer for the State Department in Central Asia. She is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and the MA program in Documentary Film at Stanford University. She is an active member of the Documentary Producer’s Alliance. \nRevere La Noue – Director/Producer/Editor\nRevere La Noue is an artist and filmmaker working on a wide array of projects all over the world. Over the past two decades\, he has had the privilege of working on feature and short format documentaries ranging in topic from woodpeckers to opera to college football. For his first feature documentary\, Revere and his partner Elisabeth Haviland James navigated 4 continents\, 3 languages\, and a myriad of creatures and wildernesses to create Overland. As a visual artist\, Revere has been collaborating and innovating on diverse multi-media projects including a large canvas print of wild horses that wrapped a city block\, an experimental photography exhibit at the Ford Presidential Museum\, and a number of solo exhibitions of abstract paintings and other mixed-media works with themes including modern dance\, architecture\, and military history. La Noue believes in the interconnectedness of all forms of art and that his experiences as a collegiate athlete help him in the team sport of filmmaking. He discovered his love for birds of prey as a teenager volunteering at a raptor rehabilitation facility at an urban wilderness park in Baltimore City. La Noue is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and received a Masters in Documentary Film from Stanford University. \n*Tickets must be purchased in advance. \nFor more information\, contact us at 802.359.5000 or info@vinsweb.org.

SUMMARY:Birding for Beginners: An Introduction to Bird ID
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL SERIES\nBirding for Beginners: An Introduction to Bird ID\nTuesdays / February 27\, March 26 & April 23 / 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM\n$15 General Public; $12 VINS Members \nRegister Today \nJoin us for a single class or the entire 3-part series. Register to receive the link to these virtual events on Zoom. \nHave you ever noticed a small flash of color high in the treetops and wondered what species of bird you are looking at? Or have you awoken to the dawn chorus of songbirds and wished you could identify who was singing outside your window? \nIf you want to get better at identifying birds by sight and sound then join VINS for a virtual series that will give you the skills to get outdoors and start birding. \nThis 3-part virtual series is an introductory course and will focus on birding basics. Each session will be devoted to a different topic related to bird ID including an introduction to some of the most common species found in Vermont\, birding terminology\, recognizing field markings\, body size\, shape and silhouette\, and bird calls. \nFrom the comfort of your home\, begin your birding journey this winter! \nSuggested Materials:\nNo materials are required. For those who wish to get into birding\, suggested materials include a notebook or journal and binoculars as well as field guides. Journals and field guides are available for purchase at the VINS Nature Store. View a selection of products available online at: store.vinsweb.org. \nThese workshops are designed for beginner to intermediate birders and are open to all ages. Kid/family-friendly materials will be provided as a follow-up to each class for those interested in further engaging in these materials with young birders. \nClass 1 / February 27\nIntroduction & Wintertime Bird ID – Winter is a great time to start practicing your bird ID skills and get comfortable recognizing the most common residents of the region. We will introduce you to helpful birding terminology and the basics of bird anatomy and field marks. This class will also teach responsible bird feeding and how to attract birds to your yard in the winter so you can start birding by just looking out your window. \nClass 2 / March 26\nSize\, Shapes\, and Silhouettes – There are over 260 birds that can be found regularly in Vermont. Being able to quickly recognize body shape and size can help narrow down the list of possible matches from hundreds to a handful of birds belonging to the same family or genus. In this class\, we will compare the wide variety of shapes and proportions that exist in the bird world and begin to understand how each variation has its evolutionary advantage. \nClass 3 / April 23\nBirding By Ear – When foliage is thick and birds are hidden deep within the forest canopy\, one way to identify them is by listening to their calls. A spring or summer soundscape in Vermont is full of wonderful bird calls\, and being able to identify a single bird amongst the many sounds can seem a daunting task.
