These formations consist of debris of all sizes\, from large fishing nets to tiny microplastics less than five millimeters in size\, trapped together by ocean currents. The most well-known and largest of these plastic islands is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch\, which covers an estimated surface area of over 617\,000 square miles—an area twice the size of Texas. However\, marine debris isn’t confined to these massive plastic islands; it has permeated all of Earth’s oceans\, even reaching remote regions with minimal human development\, such as the polar areas. \nJoin VINS for a talk with Brooke Winslow\, a Field Researcher with the Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean. Brooke will share her work alongside National Geographic Explorer Rachael Zoe Miller\, using forensic techniques to investigate microplastic and microfiber pollution in the Arctic and Antarctic. By documenting the locations of microplastic pollution and identifying its sources\, researchers with the Rozalia Project are developing actionable solutions that we can all support. \nSpeaker Bio:\nBrooke Winslow has been a dedicated member of the Rozalia Project team for over a decade. She began as an intern\, progressed to First Mate of American Promise\, co-invented the Cora Ball\, and now serves as a field researcher and data analyst for the CSI for the Ocean mapping and monitoring program. Brooke holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Seattle University. Join us for a season of Birding Meet-ups.  Starting in February and running monthly into early summer\, we will observe and track the changes in bird populations as the seasons progress. \nMeet at the VINS Nature Center for these informal gatherings with fellow birders.  The Meet-up may take place at VINS or travel as a group to nearby locations such as Dewey’s Pond or the Quechee Gorge to visit the varied habitats of our area. \nGet practice with your birding ID\, and start building your eBird or life lists.  These Meet-ups are designed for the intermediate to advanced birder who want to hone their ID skills with the help of VINS staff but all skill levels are welcome. \n* May 10\, 2025\, is Global Big Day – an annual worldwide birdwatching event that is part of World Migratory Bird Day. The May 10 Birding Meet-up will begin at 7 AM and run through 9:30 AM and will travel to several locations to maximize the number of birds we can count on this very special day. \nThese Meet-Ups will be held outdoors\, rain or shine.  Participants should dress appropriately.  Field guides and binoculars are recommended.  Binoculars will be available to borrow. \nFor more information\, contact us at 802.359.5000 or info@vinsweb.org.
