SUMMARY:Amphibian Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Amphibian Adventure\nSaturday\, March 21\n3 PM – 4 PM / Neale Pavilion\nFirst Rainy Evening / 7 PM On-call: Salamander Bucket Brigade / Dewey Mills tract\nFree and open to the public\, all ages. \nRegister here.\nRegistration suggested\, but not required. If you are coming to the Nature Center only for this event\, admission is free. If you are planning to spend time at the Nature Center before the event\, General Admission is required. \nWhy did the salamander cross the road? \nTo get to the vernal pool!  \nJoin us for Amphibian Adventure on March 21st to learn how you can help our amphibian neighbors safely travel to their spring homes. A VINS educator will teach you about this fascinating migration and give you the know-how to safely be an amphibian crossing guard. \nOn the first rainy nights of spring\, when the temperature is above 40°F amphibians like the Spotted Salamander\, Jefferson Salamander\, Wood Frog\, and Spring Peeper awaken from their winter slumber and leave their underground winter burrows and embark on a journey back to their birthplace. Hundreds of thousands of these creatures leave their forested wintering grounds to travel to vernal pools\, temporary bodies of water\,  to mate and lay their eggs. This mass migration marks the annual event known as the “big night”. But this journey is not without peril\, this migration can become dangerous when paths cross roads\, but you can help! You can avoid driving on big nights\, or you can join our team of salamander crossing guards to help shuttle amphibians across the road. To see when the next big night is going to happen check out this handy forecast. \nFor more information\, contact us at 802.359.5000 or info@vinsweb.org.

SUMMARY:Riding with Researchers
DESCRIPTION:Riding with Researchers\nThursday\, January 8\, 2026 (Make-up date: Friday\, January 9)\nThursday\, January 29\, 2026 (Make-up date: Friday\, January 30)\n8 AM – 4 PM\n$128 General Public; $115 VINS Members \nRegister today* \nRide along with the VINS Research Team in the field this winter! \nAddison County is known as a hotspot in Vermont for wintering raptors. Red-tailed Hawks\, Rough-legged Hawks\, and Northern Harriers are all often observed and some years even yield Snowy Owl sightings. \nDuring our day-long outing\, we will crisscross Addison County searching for raptors and attempting to trap and band hawks as part of our long-term winter raptor survey. Learn about raptor ecology\, behavior\, and field identification from VINS staff and get a firsthand glimpse at the equipment and process used to humanely trap and band raptors. If we get birds in hand\, we will demonstrate proper handling techniques that allow researchers to safely gather the information needed for ongoing projects. \nDetails for Participants: \n\nDress in layers and be prepared for the weather. The majority of the time will be spent in a heated vehicle but any banding work will occur outdoors in the elements.\nLunch will be eaten in the field so participants should bring their own snacks\, lunch\, and beverages.\nBinoculars are recommended. VINS has a limited supply of binoculars that can be provided if needed.\nTransportation will be provided by VINS. Due to logistical constraints and bird safety\, the entire group must travel together in one vehicle.\n\nInclement Weather Policy:\nWinter weather can be unpredictable. In the event that inclement weather forces us to cancel a trip\, VINS will contact you to reschedule the trip to the make-up date. \nParticipants should make themselves available for both the day of the trip and the make-up date. No refunds will be issued if a participantis unable to attend the make-up date. \n*Registration is required for this event. Refunds will only be issued if both the regularly scheduled trip and make-up date have to be canceled. \nFor more information\, contact us at 802.359.5000 or events@vinsweb.org.

This event is free but registration is required in advance. \nRegistration is now closed. \nWe look forward to enjoying a beautiful fall day at the Annual David P.C. In partnership with Trout Unlimited\, this free event is an engaging experience for families and friends to tie and cast flies\, and explore the fish habitat in the Callens’ pond. Afterwards\, enjoy a cookout supported by the Chang family\, Trout Unlimited\, and VINS. Please register by September 12th so that we have an accurate count for the cookout. \n*Directions to the location provided upon registration. \nFor more information\, contact Hannah Gelroth at 802.359.5000 x228 or hgelroth@vinsweb.org.
