Day 1 / Snug in the Snow: Hibernation
Monday, February 23
Many animals spend all winter sleeping, but there are a variety of forms of dormancy, hibernation being only one. Come explore all the different ways to sleep away the cold months.
Day 2 / Braving the Cold
Tuesday, February 24
For many animals, life simply goes on during the winter, albeit a little bit colder. Learn how animals adapt to the challenges winter poses: deep snow, white landscape, and brutal cold.
Day 3 / Winter on the Fly
Wednesday, February 25
Birds have many options when it comes to surviving winter. Should I stay or should I go? What do I need if I stay? If I go, where should I fly? Each option has its pros and cons, as we will learn during our day-long exploration of birds in winter.
Day 4 / A World Below the Snow
Thursday, February 26
All winter long, while there is very little sign of life above the snow, below that white layer, there is a flurry of activity as small critters go about their daily lives, protected from sight and the cold by a deep snowpack. Join us in an exploration of the subnivean layer, the secret world below the snow.
Day 5 / To Freeze or Not to Freeze
Friday, February 27
Cold-blooded animals completely disappear during the winter. Unlike birds, though, they haven’t flown the coop for warmer weather; they are toughing it out right here underground, under leaves, and even under water. Come learn about some of the most extreme animal superpowers found right here in Vermont.
