Leaders-in-Training (L-I-T) Volunteer Program for Teens

VINS Nature Camp’s Leaders-in-Training Program involves teens in our camp community by offering the opportunity to work closely with children, peers, and adults in a fun, recreational setting while providing experiences for participants to develop their leadership skills. Whether or not participants have attended VINS Nature Camp, our L-I-T Program offers a fun summer option for teens who love the camp experience or who want to gain experience leading groups in the outdoors. This specialized volunteer opportunity is offered to individuals ages 14 - 17 and who will be entering or returning to high school in the fall.

Throughout their summer, L-I-Ts work closely with VINS Nature Camp staff who mentor them during their week(s) of camp.  L-I-T responsibilities are assigned by the VINS Nature Camp Instructors they are working with and may include leading group games, assisting specific campers, or helping to prepare lessons/activities for the week.  VINS Nature Camp believes that the L-I-T Program is a valuable learning experience for all and hope that many of our L-I-Ts will eventually return as VINS Nature Camp Instructors.

Upon successful completion, all L-I-Ts will receive official acknowledgement of their volunteer hours as well as a year-long membership to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science.

As a leader, and in everyday life, I am working to become more outgoing.  Being an L-I-T has 100% helped me improve [in this area]. Interacting with fellow L-I-Ts, campers, and counselors made me more confident in social interactions.

VINS Nature Camp L-I-T

Overall, coming to VINS camp was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It has made me into a better teacher and I have more leadership skills.  I loved the feel of the camp, the energy, and the group games.  I loved being a LIT and I can’t wait to come back next year.

VINS Nature Camp L-I-T

Each year at VINS, I became more willing to put myself in positions that would challenge me both as a leader, and as a person. I think that that is because every time I stepped out of my comfort zone as an L-I-T, it was always a positive experience. I was always met with positive feedback as well as constructive criticism that I could use to improve myself for the next time.
