Facilities & Maintenance

VINS is seeking an individual to join our Maintenance team, who will be involved in all aspects of ensuring our nature center is clean, well maintained and safe for all our guests and employees. A successful candidate will have a strong eye for detail and the initiative and ability to address issues as they arise. We are seeking someone who is comfortable with operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools. Previous experience in the custodial field is preferred, but not required; we will train the right candidate. The individual filling this position will need to be able to work independently and with a team.

REPORTS TO: Facilities Manager

JOB LOCATION: VINS Nature Center, 149 Natures Way, Quechee, Vermont

Responsibilities

  • Landscaping: Assist with managing lawns, gardens, tree and trail maintenance.
  • Snow removal and winter maintenance: Clear walkways and spread grit utilizing sanding and snow removal equipment as well as hand shoveling and sanding.
  • Custodial: Clean public and administrative areas. Routinely inspect the entire campus and parking areas to remove litter and ensure no hazards exist.
  • Set up and break down events / clean and reset spaces after events.
  • Preventative and ongoing maintenance: Painting. Change filters in furnaces, air handlers, commercial dehumidifiers and other equipment. Routinely inspect playgrounds, Forest Canopy Walk and other exhibits to ensure safe working order.
  • Assist with building renovations and other types of construction projects as skills allow.

Physical Requirements

  • Willingness to wear PPE as required for equipment use and VINS’ COVID protocols.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects safely.
  • Able to work primarily outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk, climb, squat, kneel, balance, stand.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written communications and to communicate clearly.
  • Able to perform heavy physical labor.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Willingness to learn and ability to take directions.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Flexibility on schedule, including some evenings or weekend days
  • Ability to care for and maintain equipment and tools.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction, be dependable, reliable, responsible and organized.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, volunteers and the public- persons from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds.
