Field Research Assistant

VINS Research Assistant is involved in ongoing research initiatives, specifically the Winter Raptor Ecology Project. The Assistant is responsible for road side surveys of raptors and tracking study birds using radio telemetry. The Winter Raptor Ecology Project aims to understand how raptors, specifically Red-tailed Hawks and Rough-legged Hawks, utilize Addison County in Winter. Job location is headquartered in Addison County, Vermont.

REPORTS TO: Research Coordinator

JOB LOCATION: Job location is in Addison County, VT. The VINS Nature Center is located in Quechee, VT.

Research Responsibilities

  • Assist in capture of study raptors
  • Assist in recording morphometric data including wing chord, tail, tarsus, hallux, culmen, weight, micro age, and blood draws
  • Track the study birds using radio telemetry and GPS
  • Work a varied schedule that may include evenings and weekends

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Attend VINS staff meetings and participate in organization functions as required
  • Work with other departments at VINS and other organizations to facilitate research initiatives

Qualifications

  • Capable of working in remote areas of Vermont during winter conditions individually or as part of a small team
  • Ability to track raptors outdoors in variable weather conditions and terrain
  • Degree, or working toward a degree, in natural resources, wildlife biology, or environmental sciences preferred
  • General knowledge of raptor natural history (or willingness and initiative to learn)
  • Reliable access to personal transportation and a valid driver’s license
  • Previous animal-handling experience, especially raptors, preferred but not require
  • Strong organizational skills and work ethic

Compensation & Work Schedule

Compensation is $301 per week, paid every 2-week pay period. Mileage in the study area reimbursed at the federal rate. Regular workweek - 24 hours with some exceptions based on particular program offerings. Term of employment is December 6, 2022 through March 31, 2022 (some flexibility for appropriate candidates). Workday schedule will vary.
