Field Research Technician

VINS Field Research Technician assists in ongoing research initiatives, specifically the Broad-Winged Hawk Project and American Kestrel Monitoring Project. The technician would also be actively involved in all research department projects.

REPORTS TO: Research Coordinator

JOB LOCATION: Job location is headquartered in Quechee, Vermont at the VINS Nature Center with some travel throughout Vermont and New Hampshire required.

Research Technician Responsibilities

  • Conduct Broad-winged Hawk Surveys throughout the state
  • Monitor active nest sites
  • Coordinate the VINS’ American Kestrel box network
  • Communicate with landowners about nest box placement
  • Assist with placement and installation of boxes as necessary
  • Identify new landowners to expand box network
  • Monitor nest boxes throughout the breeding season
  • Work a varied schedule that may include evenings and weekends

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Attend VINS staff meetings and participate in organization functions as required
  • Work with other departments at VINS to both bring added content to public programs and facilitate opportunities for cross-promotion of programs

Qualifications

  • Capable of working in remote areas of Vermont individually or as part of a small team
  • Degree, or working toward a degree, in natural resources, wildlife biology, or environmental sciences preferred
  • General knowledge of raptor natural history, specifically Broad-winged Hawks, and American Kestrels (or willingness and initiative to learn)
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to effectively communicate with landowner partners
  • Previous animal-handling experience, especially raptors, preferred but not required
  • Strong organizational skills and work ethic
