Research Intern
VINS Research Intern assists in ongoing research initiatives, specifically the Winter Raptor Ecology Project.
REPORTS TO: Research Coordinator
JOB LOCATION: Job location is in Addison County, VT. The VINS Nature Center is located in Quechee, VT.
Research Responsibilities
- Assist in capture of study raptors
- Assist in recording morphometric data including wing chord, tail, tarsus, hallux, culmen, weight, micro age, and blood draws
- Photograph study birds
- Data collection and entry
- Track the study birds using radio telemetry and GPS
Qualifications
- Capable of working in remote areas of Vermont during winter conditions individually or as part of a small team
- Ability to track raptors outdoors in variable weather conditions and terrain
- Degree, or working toward a degree, in natural resources, wildlife biology, or environmental sciences preferred
- General knowledge of raptor natural history (or willingness and initiative to learn)
- Reliable access to personal transportation
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Previous animal-handling experience, especially raptors, preferred but not required
