Mal grew up in Albany, New York, their lifelong passion for wild birds took flight at the age of 14 when they began volunteering for their local wildlife rehabilitator at Whispering Willow Wild care. Throughout high school, Mal simultaneously volunteered at Uncharted Wild, a reptiles and exotics education program based out of Troy, NY, as well as interning at the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge, a wildlife rehabilitation and zoological facility in Wilmington, NY. Mal attended Paul Smith’s College and received a bachelors in fisheries and wildlife sciences. After college Mal spent a year interning as a zookeeping interpreter at Trailside Museums and Zoo in Bear Mountain State Park. Mal joined the VINS team in February 2022 and can be found anywhere on campus, donning either a paint brush and working on their latest creative project, a pair of wings and leading fairy hunts with children of all ages, or a bird on glove, talking excitedly to the public.
