Family-Friendly Event Features Live Reptile Encounters, Expert Presentations, and Hands-On Activities

VINS (Vermont Institute of Natural Science) announces the return of Remarkable Reptile Day on Saturday, June 7th from 10 AM – 5 PM at the VINS Nature Center. VINS invites visitors of all ages to discover the fascinating world of cold-blooded creatures through an exciting all-day celebration of reptiles. This event is included with general admission.

From turtle shells to snake smells, guests will explore amazing reptile adaptations through close encounters with both native Vermont species and exotic reptiles from around the world. The event combines entertainment with education, featuring expert presentations from leading herpetologists, interactive activities, and unique opportunities to meet rescued reptiles seeking new homes.

Science speakers from the Vermont Herpetological Atlas and Orianne Society will share cutting-edge research about Vermont’s turtle and snake populations. Kiley Briggs from the Orianne Society will present “Turtles of Vermont” at noon, diving into conservation efforts for the state’s native turtle species. At 2 PM, Ira Powsner will discuss “Snakes of Vermont,” highlighting the incredible diversity of serpents calling the Green Mountain State home and the vital role of the Vermont Herpetological Atlas in species protection.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for families to learn from the experts who are actively studying and protecting Vermont’s reptile populations,” says Mya Wiles, VINS Educator. “Our visitors can bring their most curious questions directly to these passionate biologists.”

The Vermont Natural History Museum will showcase live native reptiles throughout the day, while Uncharted Wild presents exotic species from around the globe during two featured presentations at 11 AM and 1 PM. The Vermont Natural History Museum returns at 3 PM with “Reptiles of New England,” highlighting regional species.

A unique highlight of the day is the presence of the Cold-Blooded Crusaders, a local pet rescue organization dedicated to reptiles. From 11 AM to 4 PM, visitors can meet their ambassador animals and learn what it truly takes to care for reptiles as pets. Their knowledgeable staff will be available to answer questions about responsible reptile ownership and the realities of caring for these specialized creatures.

Interactive experiences run throughout the day, including Cold-blood Crafts station, Reptile Games, Know Your Reptile Challenge and Myth-busing Sessions. This educational celebration promises to transform how visitors view these remarkable creatures, from understanding their vital ecological roles to appreciating their unique adaptations. Whether you’re a longtime reptile enthusiast or simply curious about these cold-blooded neighbors, Remarkable Reptile Day offers something for everyone.
