Animal Crossing: VINS!

There’s a whole new village spanning the habitats here at VINS and The animal villagers have plenty of chores for you to do; cleaning up their environment, restoring habitat, and completing surveys for community science, and of course, no chores go without compensation! Earn prizes completing activities such as catching insects, to add to your critter-pedia (iNaturalist), building homes for our village’s tiniest residents, planting native wildflowers in the meadow and pulling out invasives, digging for and identifying fossils, collecting things on a woodland scavenger hunt, and making crafts!

Ascend into the treetops on VINS’ Forest Canopy Walk and immerse yourself in the beauty of the summer foliage. Expect a slow-flow class that will incorporate sun salutations, standing poses, balance poses, and brief meditation. All levels of experience are welcome.

Robert Frost Through the Seasons: Summer

Each session will be dedicated to reading and interpreting poems relevant to the season. These workshops will involve gentle trail walking through the woods and meadow of the VINS Nature Center, visiting natural spaces reminiscent of locations Frost wrote about. Poems will be sent to participants in advance of each session for those who want to read the poems ahead of time. The workshops will include walking, presentation, and discussion.

Tracking Pollinators: Conservation at Home
VINS Nature Center 149 Natures Way, Quechee, United StatesAUGUST 9 - Pollinators are in your garden, along your hiking trails, and even along the side of the road, but many species are declining across the globe. To save them, we first need to learn more about them. Join the Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE) at VINS for a walk and talk through the meadow and pollinator gardens. Become more familiar with our local pollinators and efforts in the Upper Valley to conserve them, and discover ways to get involved in conservation right in your backyard.

Join a VINS educator on the canopy walk at night for the chance to observe, ID, and learn all about the moths and nocturnal insects of Vermont through the simple and fun technique of moth fishing! While waiting for our fluttering friends, meet one of our owl ambassadors who depend on these insects for food and learn how to help out insects near you!

The Art of Flight: A Fundraiser for VINS

Drawing from Nature: Pollinators and Good Garden Bugs
VINS Nature Center 149 Natures Way, Quechee, United StatesJULY 19 - We will begin this second class of our Drawing from Nature Series by exploring the summer wildflowers blooming in the VINS meadow. While outside, we’ll look closely at the diversity of pollinators visiting these blossoms and discuss identification techniques. Then, we’ll bring our references (both photos and specimens) indoors to experiment with brushstrokes and color. We will spend the rest of the workshop creating images in our nature journals.
