Amphibian Adventure

Learn what makes amphibians such amazing animals by playing games to see if you can hop as far as a frog or if you can find your way to a vernal pool.

Winter Wildlife Tracking Workshop
VINS Nature Center 149 Natures Way, Quechee, United StatesMARCH 15 - In this workshop on tracks and other signs of wildlife, we will investigate wildlife habitat by walking around the nature trails at the VINS. We will be alert for signs of river otters, deer, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, eagles, porcupines, and many other species. Participants should be prepared for walking in snow along woodland trails that are not maintained for human foot travel in the winter.
This event is hosted by Vermont Woodlands and led by Alden Smith, Executive Director at VINS.

Superb Owls
VINS Nature Center 149 Natures Way, Quechee, United StatesFEBRUARY 7 - Learn about the stats of “owl” of your favorite players at Superb Owls! Meet our ambassador owls and discover what makes them such tough competition in the fields. Play games to learn what it’s like to hunt as an owl and take a closer look inside the food chain through an owl pellet dissection. Round off the evening with an owl prowl on the VINS nature trails in search of wild owls. After the prowl, treat yourself to some Superb Owl snacks!

Riding with Researchers
VINS Nature Center 149 Natures Way, Quechee, United StatesJANUARY 29 - During our day-long outing, we will crisscross Addison County searching for raptors and attempting to trap and band hawks as part of our long-term winter raptor survey. Learn about raptor ecology, behavior, and field identification from VINS staff and get a firsthand glimpse at the equipment and process used to humanely trap and band raptors. If we get birds in hand, we will demonstrate proper handling techniques that allow researchers to safely gather the information needed for ongoing projects.

Addison County is known as a hotspot in Vermont for wintering raptors. Red-tailed Hawks, Rough-legged Hawks, and Northern Harriers are all often observed and some years even yield Snowy Owl sightings.
